The Liminal
(On going)
In this project, I took photo of the liminal spaces around Downtown Boston. These are transitional spaces between destinations that arise uncertainties. It is generally defined by physical places like airports, railway stations, parking lots, abandoned buildings, or a hallway that lead to somewhere you could not be sure about. The liminal space has been a popular internet aesthetic that is built around the dream core and mainly used in image-making to convey eerie and surreal feelings. My personal take on the concept of “liminality” is that I see it more as a word to frame the phase in our life and society which are surrounded by disorientation and the lack of belonging. Such a feeling is valid through my college life in Boston. On one hand this city held the important memories of my college life, but I would rarely feel belonging to it. So, through the documentation of the liminal space, I wish the photo can reflect my personal state of mind of not being able to find a place in this city that belongs.
As the project goes, I didn’t end up photographing specific locations that hold a meaning. Rather, it became a collection of photographs about nowhere, as the actual location of taking this series of photos became almost indistinguishable. The defamiliarization of the sense of place within these photographs are what drag people into the liminality that I am trying to explore through this project
